Voodoo Ceremonial Zombie Skull

This particular build began with a $5.00 skull a co-worker got from Walmart. She thought it would be a great addition to my current decorations I have mounted at work. Of course, I can't just leave well enough alone, so I decided to do something interesting with it. Turn it into a Voodoo Ceremonial Zombie Skull.

So, to begin with, I needed a few things, such as some sort of pedestal. So I ran down to the Hobby Lobby once again and took advantage of their half off sale.

So, for a little over $2.50 I had my pedestal. The next thing would be sanding, drilling holes for screws to mount both the skull to the candlestick and the candlestick to the wood base. (Note: The candlestick comes with a brass insert. I found this very helpful. After removing it from the candlestick, I drilled a hole in it big enough for a wood screw. Applied a little hot glue to secure the wood screw and was able to then attach it to the bottom of the skull giving me a secure mounting point). Once I completed the sanding it was time to begin painting.

Using Zinsser 1-2-3 Primer (highly recommended) I applied a few coats.

Once this dried I started on applying the undercoat. I decided to go with gold, but you can pick whatever color you'd like.

A few coats of that and then letting it dry overnight. This is very important because the next step is masking. To avoid losing any paint, it MUST be thoroughly cured.

Now I used stickers from a left over project. But you can make your own designs and draw them onto tape, then cut them out. I would recommend the blue 3M painters tape. The glue is easy on paint jobs. Once I finished masking I applied my top coat and allowed to dry. Then the fun part. Removing all of the masking. Finally I added a Fleur De Lis to the forehead. This was a leftover from another project (Bought a whole package when I needed only one. So it was nice to find a reason to use it.)
